My principle is that every student needs a secure, supportive, and motivating atmosphere in which they have the potential to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically and socially. My experience through pre-clinical and student teaching has allowed me to develop who I am as an educator. My philosophy of education believes there are three elements that are contributing factors to establishing a successful learning environment (1) the teacher as a guide, (2) allowing student interests to foster motivation to direct their learning, and (3) to develop respect for all things and all people.
Acquiring knowledge is met as students learn to find answers to their questions. As a teacher, I will guide my students and provide access to information rather than act as the primary source of information. By providing students access to hands-on activities and allowing adequate time and space to use materials that reinforce the lesson being studied, allows the opportunity for the students individual discovery of knowledge.
I will embrace the importance of self- discovery by allowing my students to have the opportunity to study things that interest them and are meaningful and relevant to their lives. One way to take learning in a direction relevant to student interest is to encourage student dialogue about the lessons and units of study. Developing a curriculum around student interests fosters motivation and the passion to learn. From personal experience and observation, when students have ownership in the curriculum, they are motivated to work hard and master the skills necessary to reach their goals.
I believe students have greater respect for their teachers, peers, and the lessons presented when they feel safe and sure of what is expected of them. I will help students develop a respect for themselves, others, and their environment, by encouraging an atmosphere where the open sharing of ideas is promoted. By setting fair and consistent rules initially and stating the importance of every activity presented, students are shown respect for their presence and time and in return, they learn to respect themselves, others, and their environment.
As an educator I plan to instill a love of learning in my students, as I share my own passion for learning. Society is competitive and therefore it is important for students to not only receive a solid education, but to work with someone who is aware of its value. As a teacher I will make myself responsible for my student’s success and their ability to excel.
